Ain't Really There

from Long Way Round by Matt Meighan

/

lyrics

Charlie went out fishing one beautiful day last fall
Something started tugging he knew it wasn't small
He played that bass 'till he fell on the grass then with one big final haul
Pulled in his line only to find a whole lot of nothing at all

It ain't really there at all, it ain't really there at all
Don't hold onto nothing and you could have it all
Kiss the joy as it flies - flies on over that wall
And don't you worry about it, it ain't really there at all

Charlie had a sweetheart she was pretty, long and tall
They'd get tight every Saturday night and he'd take her out to the mall
He was so far gone on her we knew he was headed for a fall
He gave her a kiss and made a wish and she really wasn't there at all

Charlie worked his whole life he never had too much fun
But he had his old age covered by the social security fund
On the day that he retired he gave Washington a call
They said sorry Charlie looks like we spent it all

Life is full of sorrows, life is full of joys
Sometimes the sweetest music sometimes the rudest noise
Time keeps on rolling like that clock up on the wall
Blow out the candles and make a wish - you ain't really there at all

chorus

Don’t hold on to nothing ‘cause nothing ain’t nothing at all
